Tourgar Hydrangeas

Karen is the third hydrangea farmer at Tourgar. She follows in the footsteps of Pat Power, who brought the original hydrangea root stock from Japan in 1947 and Maureen Manson-Smith, who used to host garden parties at Tourgar so visitors could enjoy the extraordinary beauty of its hydrangeas in their deep and vibrant colours.

At one time there were about 27 different varieties on the farm and some of these ancient bushes are still producing. Hydrangeas are woodland plants and Tourgar, being on a southern slope in a mist belt offers ideal growing conditions.

Tourgar is farmed according to biodynamic (BD) principles and no fertilizers, pesticides or fungicides have been used here for many years.

One has only to look at the richness of the colours of Tourgar hydrangeas to know that these are ‘free-range’ rather than ‘factory’ blooms.
