A Biodynamic Farming Experience

As a biodynamic farm, Tourgar functions as a self-sufficient organism where the animals, plants and humans work together in harmony with the cosmos.

On the farm you will find animals and birds which enhance natural biodiversity. Nguni cattle whose dung is used in compost making, Izimvu, Zulu indigenous sheep, which eat the weeds and help manage the natural vegetation, runner ducks, geese and ducks which are effective natural pest controllers and soil fertilisers, as well as a variety of chickens which work the compost and lay eggs for consumption by those living and working on the farm. Tourgar has recently also acquired 2 beautiful Jersey cows.

Crops include turmeric, ginger and garlic as well as the cut flowers. The vegetable garden provides nutritious vegetables to those living on the farm.

In the biodynamic view, the earth itself is a living entity that engages in a dynamic relationship with the forces of the cosmos. Instead of using chemicals, biodynamic compost and preparations are added, at the right time in the right way, working with the cosmic forces. Using the biodynamic approach, Tourgar has been restored to her former glory and now attracts a wide variety of birds and other wildlife.
